Calendar Lunch Menu Announcements Contact Us News & Information The U.S. School Garden Army May 13 2024 11 : 48 AM As part of their World War I and II study, eighth-grade social studies students learn how the government mobilized the country during those conflicts. They simulate the activities kids their age participated in to support the war effort. Every spring, the eighth grade joins the "School Garden Army" to plant and maintain a Victory Garden in the middle school courtyard. The U.S. School Garden Army was a 1917 federal Bureau of Education program that taught agricultural skills to students to prevent food shortages on the homefront. This was done by producing local produce as the U.S. government worked to keep Allied soldiers fed and relieve starving European civilian populations. Each eighth-grade social studies class is assigned a different vegetable to plant and maintain, with weekly visits through the end of the school year. Learning how to care for their plants properly is part of the broader goal of students understanding the sacrifices that helped ensure victory. School Garden Army volunteers from all grades also help to provide daily care. Take Me Out to the Ball Game! May 13 2024 11 : 02 AM 8th-grade students had a wonderful day at Citi Field on Thursday, May 1, 2024. The New York Mets hosted a number of schools from across the Tri-State area in partnership with an anti-bullying organization. The field trip began with an anti-bullying presentation and a class photo on the track. Students then enjoyed an exciting game against the Chicago Cubs. This trip was a great way to kick off end-of-the-year celebrations for the 8th grade. Even though the Mets lost to the Cubs, everyone enjoyed the game and the sun-filled” experience! The Bardekova Ensemble Performs at PMS Apr 28 2024 9 : 02 PM Middle School Band students enjoyed the sweet sounds of the Bardekova Ensemble during period 8 on Friday, April 12, thanks to Band Director Mr. Andrew Van Bochove. The Ensemble, a woodwind quintet, featured five professional musicians. Through the experience, students could see how a chamber ensemble functions seamlessly without a conductor. Students enjoyed various music, including compositions by Gershwin, Vivaldi, and Celia Cruz. It was an outstanding performance enjoyed by all. Gold Star Status for Pelham Middle School Apr 28 2024 8 : 58 PM Congratulations to the students and staff! Pelham Middle School has once again been named a Gold Star No Place for Hate School by the Anti-Defamation League for the 2023-24 School Year. A Gold Star honor is reserved for schools committed to combatting bullying and enhancing a culture of respect and inclusivity. Gold Star schools complete four or more anti-bias school-wide activities during the year. A special thanks to the No Place for Hate Club students led by Ms. Goldstein. Holocaust Survivors Visit PMS Mar 20 2024 11 : 37 AM Holocaust survivors Sami Steigmann and Hannah Holsten shared their incredible stories of survival with Pelham’s 8th graders on March 7th and 18th, respectively. Sami and Hannah’s presentations continued a longstanding tradition that augments the students’ study of the Holocaust and World War II. Prior to the discussion, 8th graders completed their reading and study of Night” by Elie Wiesel.
